| Special offerings during the year were Witness, One
Great Hour of Sharing, Peacemaking and Christmas Joy. In addition
to our regular gifts, there was support for the Cross and Crown
Ministry, Denver's Habitat for Humanity, Von Voorhis, Crop Walk
for Hunger, and the Heifer Project International. Continued
support for the Jeffco Action Center included site location and
volunteers to help with two fund-raisers.
As the decade of the '90s began, Shepherd of
the Hills focused attention on individual involvement and
commitment, in additional to financial support. Space was
provided for the Samaritan Counseling Center branch office. which
still continues today. Both activities involved our
financial support.
In 1991 we provided the InnerCity Parish with meals once a month for its senior citizens program, established a relationship with the Millers who were doing mission work in Bangladesh, and a group of youth assisted with a project in Juarez, Mexico. We maintained ongoing support of numerous projects and began work with Home of Neighborly Services, Habitat for Humanity, SAFE (teen shelter), Colorado Shares, and the Jeffco Self-Sufficiency Council. By 1992, we had added donations to the Crop Walk and provided food and blankets for Russia through Church World Service. A youth mission trip was financed and help was given to the shelter at Central Presbyterian Church in Denver. In 1996 we began to raise money to build a house in partnership with Metro Denver Habitat for Humanity. Our goal of $40,000 was exceeded through generous church members and a number of fund-raising activities all held on one October day. Groundbreaking on the Rubio family house, 5640 W. 28th in Wheat Ridge, was May 3, 1997, and construction soon began. Numerous members of the church worked on the house, and there were many smiling faces on the rainy day in August when the nearly finished house was dedicated. Subsequently Shepherd of the Hills has joined a Denver Presbytery mission partnership with 14 other churches. This group, called The Carpenter's Helpers, has built six Habitat houses. In 1998 under the leadership of pastor and author Frank Tillapaugh, we began to change our focus toward developing a number of D-2 Ministries, which are begun by individuals with a passion in one mission field or another. With this in mind, we've developed an animal ministry; Suit-Up and Suit Yourself drives that supply professional clothing to job seekers; One By One, which delivers food to needy people in Mexico and southern Colorado; and Helping Hearts and Hands, which offers assistance to Jeffco families in need. |
