Reflections . . .

I left the staff of Central Presbyterian Church in Denver in 1973, and later that year joined the staff of Shepherd of the Hills as associate pastor. I served at Shepherd for 13 years, leaving in 1986.

I worked with the youth and the Christian Education Committee or Department. I helped with calling on visitors and with hospital calls, and assisted in many funerals and weddings. I sang (with the tenors, of course) in the excellent choir. I preached now and then during my first years, and later I preached almost 50 percent of the time. (This was Dr. Sweet's planning).

I look back on those years very positively, with my major thought on how well Dr. Malcolm Sweet and I got along and worked together. We never had an argument, but were able to discuss our differences on some issue and come to a conclusion without getting mad or terribly upset at the other. I also came to know well and love in the highest sense of the word many people at Shepherd. And I always liked the other people on the staff, who were just excellent in their work. Leaving there for me was emotionally like leaving family.

As I look back today on over 45 years of ministry, I believe Shepherd of the Hills in those days was one of the spiritually healthiest and alive churches in our entire Presbytery. It was an honor for me to have served.   Congratulations on turning 40. And remember that old Calvinist thought: "Life begins at 40!"

Sincerely,
Rev. Dr. J. Patrick Jordan
Associate Pastor 1973-1986
Parish Associate 2001-2002
