Member care at Shepherd of the Hills
Care Center
Contact: Kathy Garvin or Dee Thorpe
The mission of the Care Center is to contact members who are ill, have recently
suffered the death of a family member or who are homebound. Birthday cards are
sent to senior members of the congregation. The Care Center volunteers are now
looking at the possibility of coordinating visits to home and facility bound
members. Volunteers contribute two hours a week to making calls and sending
notes. If you would be interested in giving some of your time to this ministry,
you are invited to contact Kathy Garvin or Dee Thorpe.
Deacons
The Board of Deacons is an elected body of 24 members involved in care-giving
ministries as the need arises including meals for members recovering from
surgery, rides to church and support for memorial services. Our church is
divided into 12 Shepherding Groups as a church within the larger church.
The purpose of these groups is to know the members in your group, to serve as a
communication link through phone trees and to identify service needs in their
own group. Such things as crisis support and new member contact are needed in
each Shepherding Group.
Each year, the Deacons sponsor a church-wide brunch after worship.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Contact: Debbi Berger
This is a new ministry at Shepherd of the Hills. Our prayer shawls are knit or
crocheted with love, blessings and prayers, ending up as a physical expression
of God’s love.
Members and guests meet on the first and third Monday nights of each month at 7
p.m. in the library to bless the completed shawls, help one another and have
some enjoyable fellowship. The shawls are then given to those in need of comfort
and in times of joy.
You are invited to join us at any time. If you prefer, you can support this
ministry with yarn, coupons for yarn or a financial donation.
Share the Care
Contact: Barbara Royle, 303-238-2482
Share the Care is a highly acclaimed small group approach to assisting with the
care of people facing prolonged illness, surgery or other times of need. A Share
the Care group of several family members, friends, church members, etc. can each
periodically give small amounts of time to defined tasks to ease the burden. No
one is asked to commit to more time than is easily managed nor to perform tasks
at which they are not skilled. Bonds formed between care receivers, family care
givers and group members are life changing. Share the Care follows a carefully
structured but easily understood model, and anyone can help!
Stephen
Ministry
Contact: Mona Baxley
Stephen Ministry is a one-to-one care-giving ministry for those in transition or
experiencing crises. These may be illness, death of a loved one, divorce,
pregnancy, job loss or general life transitions.
Stephen Ministers each receive 50 hours of in-depth training and skill building
to prepare them for this ministry. After they are trained and have been assigned
a care receiver, they walk alongside that person by meeting with them once a
week.
Stephen Ministers also participate in twice-monthly peer group supervision on
the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Those interested in becoming
Stephen Ministers should submit an application to the Stephen Leader team at
SOTH. Each Stephen Ministry candidate participates in an interview with the
Leader Team.
Are you a good listener? Do you want to make a difference in the life of
another? We encourage you to join the Stephen Ministry Team at SOTH. Please talk
to one of the Stephen Leaders—Mona Baxley, Mary Carpenter, Don Mabry, Sue Osborn
or Barbara Royle, to find out more.
