Adult Mission Trips    Contact: Mike Gerstenkorn

The SOTH Mission & Outreach Committee institutes periodic adult mission trips with various objectives and destinations. Locations can be within the borders of the U.S. or beyond doing the work that God has asked His people to do, such as helping with a Habitat for Humanity construction project.

Other than going on the trip itself and experiencing the wonders of real fellowship, there are opportunities to participate with all aspects of planning, coordinating and scheduling of a project.

Trips for 2010 to Alamosa, Colo. in the San Luis Valley are being considered. Watch for an update in The Scroll for dates.  These trips are GREAT!

Animal Ministry    Contact: LeeAnn Underwood

The purpose of the Animal Ministry is to coordinate donations of pet food and supplies and distribute those donations to local animal shelters. Table Mountain Animal Center and MaxFund have been past recipients, as both shelters rely heavily on donations.

On occasion, we coordinate a “Blessing of the Animals.” This event allows members of SOTH and guests to bring their pets to be blessed by one of the pastors.

The Carpenter’s Helpers       Contact: Kathy Reul

The Carpenter's Helpers, a coalition of several Denver Presbytery churches, has sponsored five homes in Lakewood for Metro Denver Habitat for Humanity. The Carpenter's Helpers sponsored one-half of a Habitat duplex in Aurora in 2009 and is looking forward to sponsoring a townhouse at Colorado Blvd. and I-25 in 2010.  Every October a fundraising pumpkin patch is held at St. James Presbyterian Church in Littleton.  Those wishing to volunteer to work on a Habitat house should call 303-534-2929, x120, or apply online at habitatmetrodenver.org.

The Habitat Home Improvement Outlet at 10625 W, I-70 Frontage Rd. in Wheat Ridge is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Donations of building supplies, furniture, and newer appliances are appreciated. This outlet is open to the public.

Colorado Safe Haven for Newborns          Contact:  Lil LaFleur
This ministry was formed to provide support for an existing Colorado law. Volunteers help spread the message through
posters, brochures, and bathroom magnets—in both English and Spanish—that there is an alternative for women who have unwanted newborns.

The state statute provides women (often secretly pregnant and panicked young women) with the option to bring their
unharmed newborn (up to three days old) to a hospital or fire station with no questions asked.

Our mission is to publicize the law and target young women through every possible measure. Recently, the Lord opened a BIG door and our materials are being dispersed by counselors at all Jefferson County High Schools.

Ministry opportunities:

Disburse literature and magnets to locations within the Denver metro area and throughout Colorado

Encourage members of the community and enterprising clubs to have one of our speakers at their meetings

Communion Sunday Food Collection          Contact: Jim Stockwell
The Mission Committee collects nonperishable food items monthly. Primary recipients are Jeffco Action Center and Gemini House, but the recipient group can change with the need.

The recipient agency and requested items appear in the worship bulletin at least one week before communion Sunday, which is the first Sunday each month.

Helping Hearts and Hands
Contact:          Betty Proctor, Jeffco Action Center.
Helping Hearts and Hands (HHH) is a non-profit agency that assists individuals and families in emergency situations when they have nowhere else to turn. Recently, the majority of its clients have asked for rent or energy assistance. Other clients receive assistance with utilities, medical and dental bills, car repair, child care, transportation, etc.

Throughout the year, funds are solicited from the community. For the past 26 years, 100 percent of these individual gifts have been used to help clients. Helping Hearts and Hands also raises funds through foundations, corporations, and events.  The fact that the program director and treasurer are volunteers helps keep expenses down. A 2006 grant has made it possible for HHH to hire a half time employee.

Suit Yourself/Suit Up
Contact: Lil LaFleur or Alvina Mabry

This ministry is the collection of women’s and men’s business and/or casual attire for the workplace. Clothing drives take place in both the spring and fall. Our congregation has opened their hearts and closets to donate to the less fortunate for many years.

DenverWorks has been one of our recipients since the beginning of this ministry. This agency trains people with up-to-date skills to re-enter the job market. Their clients are given suitable clothing for interviews and the start of a new job.

We have added another recipient because of our overwhelmingly generous donors. This new partnership is with New Images at Red Rocks Community College. They accept children’s clothes and toys and casual women’s clothing. They help their students in need and their children who attend RRCC day care.

Dress for Success is back in Denver. This group was added as a recipient for our spring 2007 drive. Disadvantaged women “shop” in the “boutique” where they find a suitable wardrobe for interviews and new jobs.

Women at Shepherd of the Hills contribute many beautiful, gently used professional clothing and accessories to all three organizations. Because of our abundantly generous congregation there’s more than enough for each non-profit.

Ministry opportunities:
Donate clothing
-  Executive mentoring
-  Language exchange volunteer
-  Partners for Success job mentor
-  Job Search computer lab assistance
-  Office support
-  Volunteer at special events or projects hosted by the non-profit groups
