Happy Independence Day

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

This is the opening sentence of the Preamble of the Declaration of Independence which was ratified on July 4, 1776. The purpose of the declaration was to announce and explain separation from the Kingdom of Great Britain. These words have come to be seen as emblematic of America's founding ideals.

During this week in which we celebrate the 249th anniversary of the ratification of the Declaration of Independence, let us give thanks for the wisdom of our forefathers and ask God for the wisdom to be able to maintain these self-evident truths.
