During our Ash Wednesday service, Pastor Matt challenged us to consider what it might mean to give up injustice for Lent. Not just in the abstract, but in the daily habits, assumptions, and systems that shape our lives.

Our new Justice in Song Project is one tangible way we are responding to this Lenten call and living into the vision and mission of SOTH. Rooted in Jesus’ teaching that “the laborer deserves to be paid” (Luke 10:7) and inspired by Zacchaeus’ act of generous restitution (Luke 19), Justice in Song seeks to honor the work of underrepresented composers and practice tangible repair through our giving.

Throughout the year, our choir will intentionally share anthems written by composers from underrepresented communities, especially composers of color whose sacred music has too often been overlooked in predominantly white church spaces. As we learn their melodies, we also honor their stories, their faith, and the image of God reflected in their artistry.

Each time one of these anthems is offered in worship, you’ll be invited to participate beyond listening. Pew envelopes marked Justice in Song will be available in the pew racks. Gifts placed in these envelopes will go into our Justice in Song Fund. At the end of the year, those funds will be directed toward organizations and initiatives that advance equity and justice in meaningful ways.

If this vision stirs something in you, I would love your voice at the table. We are forming a small team to help discern where the funds will be distributed. If you feel passionate about this work, consider joining us. Justice in Song is something we will build together!

Giving up injustice this Lent isn’t just about what we leave behind—it’s about what we choose to lift up. Through music, generosity, and community, we live into the vision of God’s kingdom here and now.

Blessings,

Jen Ketcham

Worship Leader
