Justice in Song: Singing Our Mission

As we kick off a new season of ministry at SOTH, we’re thinking about what it means to be a vibrant hub for spiritual growth, community, partnership, and care for creation, rooted in God’s love and justice. Inspired by scripture, “The laborer deserves to be paid” (Luke 10:7) and “Better is a little righteousness than great revenues with injustice” (Proverbs 16:8), our Justice in Song Initiative is one way the music department is putting that mission into practice.

Throughout the year, when our choir sings music by composers from historically underrepresented or marginalized communities, we’ll invite the congregation to give to our Justice in Song Initiative using specially marked pew envelopes. Rather than directing these gifts to a particular organization each time, we’ll allow the fund to grow throughout the year. At the end of the year, we’ll prayerfully decide how to distribute those funds to support living composers, communities, or organizations that create opportunities for people in these communities to learn, make, and experience music.

Our prayer is that music becomes one of the ways we put our vision into motion: may we listen for new voices, make room for them, and use what we have to help those voices be heard.
