Reformation Sunday

This Sunday is Reformation Sunday on the church calendar – but we celebrate “Scot Sunday” on Reformation Sunday. That’s because our roots are in the Reformation of the 16th century and the influence of John Calvin and John Knox. Presbyterians played a significant role in shaping Protestant Christianity especially in Scotland and the United States. John Knox studied under Calvin and upon returning to his native Scotland, helped establish a national church governed by presbyters, leading to the adoption of the Scots Confession in 1560 and which marked Scotland’s transition to Protestantism.

Presbyterians were among the earliest Reformed immigrants to America. They settled up and down the East Coast, and began to push westward into the American wilderness, founding congregations as early as the 1630s. In 1706, seven Presbyterian ministers formed the first Presbyterian presbytery in the New World. The clergy assumed the freedom to organize and the right to worship, preach, teach, and administer the sacraments. Today, Presbyterians continue to engage in social justice issues, mission work, and interfaith dialogue.

So, Sunday, lets celebrate our Scottish roots – even if you aren’t Scottish. Be sure to wear a tartan or something plaid. Come and enjoy worship with the pipes and drums.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Heather
